Gabrieli Proposal to Legalize Gambling in MassachusettsChris Gabrieli, Democratic gubernatorial candidate, passed a proposal to legalize gambling in Massachusetts. The proposal aims to increase revenues that can be sent returned to the cities and towns. The gambling revenues can also decrease the pressure of property taxes. According to Mr. Gabrieli, People of Massachusetts are visiting Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in Connecticut. A roughly estimation of nine hundred million dollars are being spent there by Massachusetts gamblers. Gambling is a continuing disruptive topic in Beacon Hill with the Democratic controlled legislative body having killed recently the bill to add more slot machines the state racetracks. The Republican governor, Gov. Mitt Romney, announced that he will veto the bill if it will reach his office. The state is expected to face another gambling issue as the Indian tribe is expected to apply for federal approval for a casino on their tribal property. Mr. Gabrieli, stated that Massachusetts had already allowed gambling through the Massachusetts Lottery. A multimillionaire, Gabrieli said that the majority of people going to Connecticut casinos are from the middle class and gambling will not prey on the poor. Christy Mihos, independent gubernatorial aspirant, said that he is supporting slot machines, but not casinos in Massachusetts. According to Republican candidate Kerry Healey's campaign, the casinos are not a good idea for Massachusetts. |
